Many of us are spending a lot more time out in our gardens than we used to and that has led to a lot of us noticing that our gardens aren’t quite as pretty as they possibly could be. Often, it is the patio area that is letting us down, rather than the main garden itself.

So let’s see what we can do about it with a few ideas on how to upgrade your patio!

Clean It Up

Often, the biggest problem with the patio area is that it’s taken a beating from the elements and it isn’t quite as clean and shiny as it could be!

The good news is that this is a really easy problem to remedy with high pressure cleaning. Using a pressure washer, or having a professional cleaning company come out and use a pressure washer to clean up your patio is an amazing way to have it looking as good as new again.

Then, it’s just a matter of keeping on top of it by sweeping, mopping and de-weeding it every few weeks to keep it looking its best. This is one of the easiest ways on how to upgrade your patio easily!

Pots and Plants

Adding a few splashes of colour is a sure way to cheer up your patio area…

Herbs are particularly good because not only do they look great, but they make the patio area smell amazing too. If you do choose to place pots of herbs on the patio, go for colourful pots in shades of lavender, rose and sunflower yellow to add pops of colour and contrast with the green of the herbs.

If you’re more of a flower person, let the pretty petals do the talking and keep pots neutral.

Up-cycle the Furniture

If your patio table and chairs have seen better days, you can instantly give them a new life with a fresh coat of paint.

If they’re made of wood, you’ll first need to sand and prime them before adding a coat of paint – lavender-grey always looks good in outdoor spaces, but everything from classic brown to Fuschia pink is available so you should have no problem finding something to suit your taste – and then adding a layer of sealant to protect from the elements.

If your furniture is metal, you’ll need to sand off any rust or damaged paintwork before applying a metal primer and paint that is rust-resistant.

Have a parasol that’s looking worse for wear? Upcycle it by carefully removing the fabric and using it as a template around which to cut out new fabric. You can then sew the new fabric to the old frame for a brand new look. Choose patterns paisley or polka-dotted fabric for a pretty patio accessory.

Cushions and Throws

Placing a few outdoor floor cushions and cosy throws around on the patio is a great way to soften the area and maximise the amount of seating your have. It’s also a really cheap way of adding more colour to the space too.

There’s no reason why you can’t also add a rug, which will make the space seem softer and less like a driveway, while also making the space warmer too. If you have multiple different types of seating – soft casual seating and dining – adding outdoor rugs can help to define these spaces.
